Are you kidding? Plenty of unpopular kids are beaten up by popular kids all the time. The popular kids gain status that way

You are missing my point. The popular kids gain no status if they look like they had to _bust their ass_ to kick yours. This is why resisting works, because it encourages the bully to pick an easier target.
