Do we have any plumbing experts here? Strange plumbing problems: A while ago, no hot water. Figured it was the heating element, replaced it. In the process, found red button tripped, pushed the button. Probably the heating element had been fine.(cont)
Sometimes I have noticed the water has been unusually hot, but it's always seemed to be just for a short time, like the water in the heater was only really hot at the top

Do you mean the cold water supply vs. the hot water temps we're seeing? The cold is a normal cold temp, like 40 degrees or so, and the hot is usually a somewhat low hot like 120

hmm, maybe if the lower thermostat isn't working them the upper heater would be doing all the work? Why would that overheat the system and cause the button to trip, though?
