Do we have any plumbing experts here? Strange plumbing problems: A while ago, no hot water. Figured it was the heating element, replaced it. In the process, found red button tripped, pushed the button. Probably the heating element had been fine.(cont)
System was mostly working, but occasionally the red button would trip and need to be pressed. Figured the thermostat was bad. Replaced upper thermostat. Still having red button trip maybe once a month. (cont)

In faucet directly above water heater one floor, the cold water starts out hot then turns cold. In nearby shower, water isn't quite hot enough except when the hot water on that same faucet is turned on.

I suspect this weird hot in the cold faucet problem is related to the red button problem. Water heater overheats and overflows into cold pipe? Why is it overheating? Would all this be fixed by replacing the lower thermostat too?

Sometimes I have noticed the water has been unusually hot, but it's always seemed to be just for a short time, like the water in the heater was only really hot at the top
