they found some ballistics expert to testify that the gun fired accidentally, or at least could have this is after he changed his story from "aiming at sea lions" to "i picked it up and it went off"

The gun firing “accidentally” is basically impossible. The jury probably knows little to nothing about firearms, though, given the area.
