I never did quite understand why people left LiveJournal. It was a good site. I've always regarded Twitter as lacking in comparison in various ways (too ephemeral, poor threading, character limit has pluses and minuses).

LiveJournal came and went, just like Friendster and Myspace. I've always expected Facebook to follow the same pattern, but it's surprised me in its staying power. I barely ever use FB. Twitter had some things going for it when it was free, but those days are over.

I don't think Twitter can survive as a platform with a strict censorship regime. People don't go to a site like this for the same reasons they go to Facebook.

People go to Facebook to talk to people they know in real life. Because of this, people are already somewhat careful about what they say (this is why I don't use FB). Strict censorship doesn't bother people sharing baby pics with grandma.

People go to Twitter to talk to people they don't know IRL. Many are anonymous. Free discussion and the lack of IRL consequences is a real draw. This is a very different type of communication from FB, and strict censorship will cause mass exodus.

Twitter management seems hellbent on driving their company into bankruptcy.
