Not unreasonable, but you'd think the population not benefiting from it would have opposed slavery long before then.

Doubt there was broad understanding of economic principles at the time, so just a moral/ethical argument

Civil War is interesting, because the South fought to the bitter end and then some.

I think they believed the system of slavery as a whole was good for them. Where slavery was weak, large numbers of people defected to Union
