What does being American even mean anymore? We used to revere the Revolution, the Founding Fathers, and the Constitution.

combination of democracy plus libertarianish ideas about freedom from government intrusion. Nowadays you hear much less about all of those.
-
The freedom and constitution memes are mostly restricted to boomer conservatives, and nearly everyone else not in the alt-right just
-
talks about equality and racism. Nonwhites especially have little interest in absolute freedom of speech, among other American Values.
-
So if being American doesn't have much to do with American Values anymore, what does it mean? Does it mean your ancestors have been here for
-
generations or that you share DNA or personality characteristics with most Americans? Do you even need to know English?
-
Or does it just mean that you were born here or that your immigration paperwork is in order? And if it's just the latter, what's the point?
-
Unless we come up with a compelling definition of what it means to be American, the open borders crowd will continue winning.
-
Many of us do have ideas about this (I'd start with DNA), but so far the general public hasn't accepted anything in particular.
