It has been done since Medieval times. Wealthy merchants without issue often funded schools or hospitals directly instead of via the Church

Universities today are barely distinguishable from corporations. Would you give to McDonald's?

The UK is still a bit different. I would certainly fund a scholarship, say for members of The Scouts. Might even do so.
