Yeah, that usually happens, until they mix. People naturally divide into groups, and race can be the basis for that.

First of all, "genetic interest" is a misleading term. You are selected to be a DNA replicator, and to be good at that function.

Selection at the gene level does not imply that the phenotype does what is "good for the genes" necessarily.

Eg suppose there is a gene that makes male lions kill offspring of other males. This behavior might not be good for lions in general.

That's a misleading way to think about it. Remember that "genes competing" is a metaphor.

Genes compete only in the sense that they are differentially selected, based on what individuals reproduce.
