Just look at 80s music. Michael Jackson, Prince, etc. I think whites really thought they'd get along with blacks more then.

I pretty much see this as parallel to the 19th C African Art movement in Europe - art had become "respectable…"

…and African art was seen as engaging with topics such as sexuality and dominion over other men in a raw & honest way.

The major issue was the sense that "mainstream" art had ceased to honestly treat these topics.
