On the one hand, we have civilization advocates pointing out the massive increases in power, population, technology, & standards of living
We could conceivably reduce suffering in a way that doesn't mean the destruction of civilization.Most is not actually helpful

Right. But broadly speaking, the "obvious" advantages of tech ppl point to first are the most fundamental source of modern problems!

Any attempt to adapt social mechanisms to new tech which doesn't start w/ massive +++ in death rate is moving around the deck chairs
