I've talked on here about how I basically knew about HBD long ago, but for a long time I held on to progressive beliefs despite that.
Basically I thought everything would work out better if everyone tried to maximize total net happiness.

People could sort of agree to strive toward rational universalism, right? We could at least all unite behind the idea of
-
wanting the best for Americans as a whole and agreeing with basic American principles like freedom of speech and the neutral rule of law,
-
right? And, ok, I did realize that others weren't really going along with this, but that just meant to me that we should promote it harder.
-
Well eventually I realized that this wasn't working. I realized that no matter how much I tried to convince others to think that way, they
-
just wouldn't do it. I realized that society is like a bunch of prisoner's dilemmas, and you can't just keep trying to cooperate when
-
others defect. I realized that others were fundamentally hostile to my interests and even to common interests when I saw the "white
-
privilege" meme pushed harder and harder. I saw that we couldn't agree on basic principles of self-defense or even on the nature of reality
-
with the Trayvon case. And so I stopped believing that being a sucker was morally good and that we should keep trying
-
to cooperate with everyone and started believing in group interests.
