I think he could have brokered a deal

either one that allowed secession or some kind of genuine compromise on slavery.

He could have, but saying he wasn't good enough to do that is not as bad as saying he was the root cause of the problem.

It is, but I think any of the bottom 20 presidents would have ended up in a civil war in his position.
