We need institutions where people can dedicate themselves to contemplation and learning but won't be expected to publish much.

'Publish or perish' over-incentivises novelty. Intractable pseudo-problems are great sources of novelty, as is attacking the establishment.

Overtly religious educational institutions probably help. Most people engaged in a quiet life of contemplation, publication sparse.

There's a lot of work to be done now, but hopefully much less in future; we need to think about that in terms of the incentives we create.

@mr_scientism NASA plus meritocratic hiring, a lot more funding, and not too much concern over results could have a great eugenic effect
