Yeah I wouldn't claim this stuff is definitive. My guess is that "internal monologue" was widely interpreted as "hearing voices"

Right. This whole thing is probably the result of a poor study or the misinterpretation of a study. I vaguely remember a study that merely said that people varied in relation to the amount of internal monologue they experienced.
