Are we really doing this? Are we really pretending that this was Trump just praising Robert E. Lee for the hell of it (b/c, the obvious subtext goes, he's dog-whistling)? This insults the intelligence of anyone who checks speech. It was a wind-up to praise Grant for beating him.https://twitter.com/BrentGriffiths/status/1050938340718125056 …

Look, I'm a guy who is going to hang Trump's post-Charlottesville comments around his neck for as long as he lives, that's how unforgivable I found them. And even *I* recognize this for the bullshit story that is. Journos pushing it should feel a sense of shame.

Well you shouldn't. Trump's "very fine people" was referring to those there that objected to mobs tearing down statues, as the statues were of historical significance. They were not part of the neo-Nazi contingent. That's obvious.https://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/media/346878-the-media-couldnt-be-more-blatant-in-distorting-trumps-words-on …

The entire rally was organized by groups of Nazis and white nationalists. There’s no daylight between the organizers and the statue issue. Hence, anyone who supported it were not “very fine people”.

No daylight? According to whom? You? Ha, okay. These folks, and many others, would be amused by your blanket and bigoted characterization of those who care about the historical significance of these statues.pic.twitter.com/ZNMKsIFKB6
