Sure, without the Industrial Revolution and the scientific revolutions, humanity would have had a much less impactful effect on the environment. But we would still be living miserable and difficult lives, as was the norm for most of our history. Comfort came at a price.

Of course. The idea way the have both nice lives and lower impact on the environment would be to have far fewer people, but that ship has sailed.
