I don't know that much about Civil War battles, but saying that a general was great and winning a lot of battles is not the same as endorsing his side of the war.https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1050901081537073155 …

I watched the speech--in context, Trump was setting up the desperation of Lincoln at Lee's string of victories and ultimately his praise of local (Point Pleasant) Ohio Boy, U.S. Grant, whose ruthless campaigning finally beat Lee.pic.twitter.com/YhS0ecaHcH

General Lee was, objectively and incontrovertibly, a great military leader, but were many other less controversial figures. Mentioning him in particular was deliberate — master troll status upheld👌

he's really just saying he was good at being a general, which some people really think is true, I don't know either. I do know Lee was more sympathetic to the Union but felt a duty to represent his country (Virginia).

I can say that I know a bit about the civil war. General Robert E Lee may have been one of the greatest if not The Greatest American general ever. He fought in the wrong side of the war but it was incredible what he was able to accomplish. Stonewall Jackson was also impressive.

Lee was at the top of his class and spent 32 years in the U.S. Army before the Civil War. People can disagree about the war but Lee himself was an honorable man. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Lee …

If you get a chance to visit Civil War battlefields, definitely do it! I went to Gettysburg earlier this year and was amazed. To stand where military leaders stood and see what they saw is a profound experience.
