If you can get a SCOTUS clerkship, you can get $160k+ your first year. But most firms count clerkship years as associate years for pay and advancement to partner, and the prestige and connections can help you assemble a book of business.

Depends entirely on how you play it. If you go from there to AUSA to the bench / US Attorney, no. But you're on the fast track for a circuit court or high office.
