Republicans could have said: "This man has been a federal judge for years, and now after sitting on the accusation for 6 weeks you want a hearing in which we know nothing can be conclusively proven anyway? No" Now that they've had the hearing, they have to say "I believe side x"

They could have avoided this, but they've ended up in a much tougher position now--they're forced to make claims about the truthfulness of each side, and they can't even say "eh, I dunno" because the response to that is, "You can't put someone on SCOTUS who *might* be an abuser."

Saying "I'm ok with there being a chance this guy did this because it doesn't really matter to his job performance, it was a long time ago, and we have to deter false claims" is interpreted in the normie mind as "let's just let people rape women whenever they want"

Assume Blasey depicted events accurately: There was no crime and no assault! If that was a crime, then every boy or husband is a rapist who initiates intimacy but whose hand gets pushed away because she’s not in the mood, she changed her mind or he’s going too fast.

He didn’t even feel her up! Busted for perhaps a clumsy attempt on second base as a teenager... No mercy. No statute of limitations.

To be fair, the throwing her on the bed, locking the door, and putting a hand over her mouth part is criminal enough if it was actually as bad as described. Of course, memories after that long are likely exaggerated.

It’s also plausible they were just all horsing around and he out of reflex briefly covered her mouth when she squealed. Otherwise quite right if he out of the blue suddenly, intentionally and maliciously dragged her away and held her down against her will.

Oh I agree that's absolutely possible. That would be something marginally criminal but shouldn't really be.
