Nerds aren't actually interested in niche topics, though. Star Wars and Game of Thrones aren't terribly esoteric.

Maybe it's a regional thing, that's how the terms are generally used here in leafland and wiki seems to agree with me, I think, but it could be different somewhere else.

Nerds are just bookish, socially awkward, usually into science and video games, oblivious to pop culture. Geeks are more like the classic comic book store guy with extensive arcane Star Wars knowledge.
