I'm speaking of the kind who of people who use the term entirely as an aspirational social type, not in the older sense that was purely descriptive.

Nerds aren't actually interested in niche topics, though. Star Wars and Game of Thrones aren't terribly esoteric.

There's a reason why the name of an ACTUAL niche hobby's primary internet hub is called "http://Boardgamegeek.com ,") not "Board Game Nerd."

"The word geek is a slang term originally used to describe eccentric or non-mainstream people; in current use, the word typically connotes an expert or enthusiast or a person obsessed with a hobby or intellectual pursuit, with a general pejorative meaning[...]"

Compare: "A nerd is a person seen as overly intellectual, obsessive, introverted or lacking social skills." Both from Wiki.

NB that the geek is inherently an enthusiast or expert, while the nerd "may spend inordinate amounts of time on unpopular, little known, or non-mainstream activities, which are generally either highly technical, abstract, or relating to topics of science fiction or fantasy."

IOW, the nerd is defined by a particular mode of consumption, i.e. autistic escapism, and he need not even truely appreciate what he consumes.

I have a friend who does IT, he reads hard science fiction and complains if the science doesn't work. He largely ignores character and plot. Bad, but with redeeming qualities. Geek. I have an acquaintance who enjoys Marvel comics because they're "Awesome." NERD.

Maybe it's a regional thing, that's how the terms are generally used here in leafland and wiki seems to agree with me, I think, but it could be different somewhere else.

Nerds are just bookish, socially awkward, usually into science and video games, oblivious to pop culture. Geeks are more like the classic comic book store guy with extensive arcane Star Wars knowledge.
