People often say that we're heading toward a civil war, but I'm not sure how it would actually happen. Yes, divisions are increasing, but how would this move to actual war?

Maybe not a state. Perhaps a county or city. For example: a mayor of a small town refuses to bow to a leftist state or federal politician on taxes or immigration, and is made an example of. Think Waco, but on a small rural city hall or police station. Not implausible at all.
-
That just gets immediately put down. Basically a non-event
-
Put down how? Federal agents show up and handcuff them? Probably, but imagine the backlash, even if it's resolved so easily. There are many of us who wouldn't allow the media to bury it. It may not be the spark that ignites a powder keg, but it will be a step in that direction.
-
No backlash. People don't want to go to prison.
-
True, but I didn't mean physical backlash. It will be one step closer to normies seeing the state as the bad guy that can and will harm them. I think such an event would be far from inconsequential.
