John Rain would approve this insightful @jakeadelstein take on what it means to be Japanesehttps://thebea.st/2Nl9VBW

According to the crusading Mr. Adelstein, even the yakuza are now "oppressed" and crime is low in Japan not because of its cohesive, high-trust society, but because the police there are well-paid and "omnipresent" (they're not). How about letting the Japanese define themselves?

Dude, do you even live in Japan @KingBaeksu ? "The Japanese" aren't a monolith entity. Japan is not your girlfriend. Amongst those who actually live here, the idea of Japanese as an identity is varied Get a hobby. Don't bother Barry, he has a real job. I just find you amusing.

Mr. Adelstein and Mr. Eisler have extremely strong opinions on how "Japan Needs ‘Foreigner Blood’ Like Naomi Osaka’s" and you aren't entitled to question them, much less to suggest that maybe the Japanese should get the final say on the matter.http://www.unz.com/isteve/japan-needs-foreigner-blood-like-naomi-osakas/ …

Of course I have an opinion—hopefully that's ok? Grateful if you could be more specific about who suggested that “no one is entitled to question” it, and that "Japanese should [not] get the final say on the matter." (Wouldn’t it be more productive to engage the actual arguments?)

In general, people are threatened, attacked, and fired for questioning the need for diversity. Also, you and/or the other guy argue that Japan *must* increase diversity, rather than saying that the Japanese people should decide to embrace diversity. Subtly anti-democratic

And the truth is, the populations of many nations have opposed increased immigration and diversification, yet they've been subjected to it despite their opposition. I'm sure you think this is a good thing. Why is that?

Appreciate the thoughtful reply—not something Twitter is well-suited for. Can’t speak for Jake, but I don’t think he chose the “must" sub-lede; regardless, I think it implies an “if Japan wants to keep the working-age population constant”...

That said, I certainly agree that how to handle immigration isn’t for outsiders to decide. Though I can also say that as an American, I have no problem with (in fact, I welcome) outsiders opining about America. Anyway, thanks again for the thoughtful response.

When I visited Tokyo, I hardly saw any cops at all. Japan is one hundred eleventh in the world when it comes to number of police per capita. Anyone who says that police in Japan are 'omnipresent' is either lying or just a damn fool. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_number_of_police_officers …

Agreed that what is behind low Japanese crime levels is a more complex topic than just the number of police. But hopefully we can still discuss the interesting and important question of what makes someone Japanese/American/Ethiopian etc…?
