Good point. One reason Poland/Hungary have had right-wing political success may be that more liberal Poles/Hungarians have moved abroad. Evaporative cooling allowing for a pause in the poz. But current US is too big, too centralized/federal to allow this.

It's the question of formal vs informal power. e.g. the Trump admin formally has a lot of power but it's not real power if the system doesn't obey. If we have to squabble with enemies over complete control of DC to get anything done, how much territory is actually controlled now?
