Art of the Deal was to demand $50B for the wall and get 35. Back in 2017. Not cave to GOPe whims and kick the can down the road 5X on a measly $5B. @realDonaldTrump has reached a critical point at which core support has begun to erode for lack of seriousness on this key issue.

I am confident we will get the wall though. 2020 hinges on it. Would've been preferable to have the wall already fully funded and construction underway, with Trump moving on to tackle his 70 point immigration plan, and *gasp* birthright citizenship as his 2020 platform.
-
If the wall was built by now, it would give Trumps base a false sense of security. They would believe they won the immigration battle and disconnect altogether. Lib politicians would energize their base by promising to tear it down.

The government might sue if Trump does another immigration EO, so better sit tight! Wouldn't want to mobilize the Democrats!!
-
As you know, wall is least important to solving demographic decline. MAGA plebs think wall is most important. Wall is only useful as a symbolic political ploy to motivate base. If wall was already built it would solve nothing and become symbolic motivator for dem politicians.
-
OK fine, let's say the wall is "symbolic". What progress had he made on other issues that are not "symbolic"? H1-B is ongoing, no mass deportations, birthright citizenship ongoing, no effective muslim ban. He's done nothing. All that happened are some minor tweaks by Sessions.
-
I think the problem is more that his power is limited than that he's not trying.
