You can do so right up until crypto's inevitability and ubiquity. Not many people in the world can avoid the dollar except in the most abstract of ways even if they wanted to, and they're all still trading cows and sheep for wives.

The transaction costs are all artificial and actually in place currently to help it grow in a system that is hostile to it. Mining is designed to pay for itself by producing more bitcoins as a reward for computing transactions. The whole system is utterly brilliant.

What's pretty damned cool is that once it has social currency, the competition for the cheapest transaction fees begins. And the whole thing can be started over with a simple fork. The really hard part is just earning that social currency, and that is slowly happening.
