It is like a religion to some people. Maybe it’s the autist in me, but I have such a hard time understanding the true believers and why they believe the things they do. Is it just because they think everybody else believes it?

The first time I encountered it being seriously discussed, I was horrified. Why focus on such a hostile idea? Isn't privilege a good thing? If you want to talk about privilege, why not focus on executive pay & the top 1%? It always seemed disastrous to national harmony to me.
-
Anyway, why did it catch on so much? I guess people were really itching for "explanations" for racial inequality, and they just latched onto it. Occupy Wall Street tried to focus on the top 1%, but it turns out that people are actually far more interested in racial politics.

White privilege and institutional racism are the perfect kind of nonsense that leftists can use as talking points. The terms are malleable enough to be able to designate anything and you do not really need to know much to use them, but they sound sophisticated and they are good

-
Well, critical theory/cultural marxism does have a longer history, but the idea that really changed things in the last 20 years was "privilege"
-
WHEN did both White privilege & White guilt first appeared in MSM & public culture
. I don't remember seeing those words/terms online in 1990's and first half of 2000 decade -
The term "white guilt" isn't used positively today. The sense of white guilt has been around since at least the 60s. The term "white privilege" originated in the 80s but was very obscure until ~2005
