Two biggest mistakes of Japan-US portion of WW2: 1. Japan not understanding that it was outmatched and that bombing Pearl Harbor would start an unwinnable war. 2. The US provoking Japan enough that Japan decided bombing PH was necessary. What was the point?

My understanding was that it was mere dumb luck that the fleet wasn't at port that day.

My take is that even if it had been the course of the war would not have been substantially different.

If they'd studied the Punic wars even in passing, they'd have known that. It's easy to rationalize any decision, though.
