Two biggest mistakes of Japan-US portion of WW2: 1. Japan not understanding that it was outmatched and that bombing Pearl Harbor would start an unwinnable war. 2. The US provoking Japan enough that Japan decided bombing PH was necessary. What was the point?

lol @ the idea they could effectively take out the entire Pacific fleet or that that would be sufficient even if they did

My understanding was that it was mere dumb luck that the fleet wasn't at port that day.

My take is that even if it had been the course of the war would not have been substantially different.

If they'd studied the Punic wars even in passing, they'd have known that. It's easy to rationalize any decision, though.

IIRC Japan had a limited supply of fuel oil for their fleet. Their choices were attack now, and probably loose. But maybe not! They knew if they waited they would definitely loose because their fleet would be immobilized.

Clearly they should have just backed off and changed their war plans.

They were already going after China, too... At some point you have to say, "Maybe we should win the first fight thought unwinnable before picking another."

Japanese leadership was pathetically myopic but German leadership was no better.

The point was knowingly letting them commit Pearl Harbor in order to join the war. But you should already know this.

Fine, we can change it to: 2. The US wanting to enter the war and thus provoking Pearl Harbor. What was the point?

The crushing of anything that looked as if it might have been even slightly reactionary and setting the path to globohomo-ize the world in glorious global revolution.
