1. This country was founded on freedom of belief. 2. Since YOU choose your beliefs, not the govt, not anyone else, YOU protect YOURSELF from believing bad things. Not the govt, not anyone else.
-
3. The AM radio industry is character actors and has been since at least the 1970s-1980s. They don't believe 100% of what they say; some of it is just to generate controversy. Alex Jones is not new or unique in politics.
-
Ann Coulter and Newt Gingrich used to regularly speak on college campuses where they were booed. Knowing this, they prepared speeches that were half things they sincerely believed and half self-parody, to troll Democratic activists. The Young Dems, Young Reps knew this.
-
Only the newest of people to politics, the lowest foot soldiers not in communication with the inner circle, thought that these speakers were sincere in everything they said.
-
Nor is this unqiue to the right. More recently, Stephen Colbert played a character on TV for a political show, as did John Liebowitz (John Stewart.) Acting like Alex Jones is some totally new thing in light of the very long and prominent existence of political theatre is silly.
-
4. Since Alex Jones is best understood as political theatre, it would not at all be a stretch to say he is doing art. Your friend is literally arguing for the banning of art, because it is offensive.

Alex says some wild stuff but he has incredibly good takes sometimes. I remember listening to him in late 2000s and he was saying after iraq Syria and Lybia will be next. I thought that was crazy at the time considering how unpopular Iraq was. He was right though.

"Lies" are often symptoms of a broken discourse. To prevent lies, you don't ban them -- you improve the discourse instead (which usually means widening the moral Overton Window). Of course, the powers that be would rather do the former.
-
(I was specifically thinking of Sandy Hook misinformation above. The "discourse" here is that middle Americans see guns as both culturally important and a bulwark against the increasingly real threat of civil war. But you can't talk normally to people about civil war.)

“I don't believe in freedom of speech for people knowingly spreading dangerous lies that are being advertised as facts.” There’s no limiting principle to this. Gov’t and Monopolists will rule over you, and you’ll be in ignorance. What’s the limiting principle to stop tyranny?

I wonder how many people who never cared about Alex Jones will now look him up And even if you manage to completely eradicate his online presence, others will fill the vacuum he leaves behind

Take an example of fake news from the corporate media (e.g. "Hands up don't shoot") and ask whether his criteria apply to it as well. Of course, you have to reveal yourself a bit. Or talk about other examples of corporate censorship (e.g. Damore).
