Didn't susceptibility to alcoholism also eventually get selected out of populations in peoples who were exposed to that temptation over many generations? Is there a significant difference in fertility among the obese?
-
I mean, Russia and Finland exist, so I’m going to go with “Not always.” That’s a good question about fertility, though.

How do evolutionary anthropologists usually explain different susceptibility to alcoholism among peoples? Why has southern Europe's "wine filter" been more effective at purging alcoholism than northern Europe's "beer filter?"
-
Maybe high alcohol consumption is helpful in some situations (long winters, enduring pain of tilling frozen earth, merely getting along when night is long&full of terrors)? A friend asked what to make of the ubiquitous sentimentality in Russian fiction and it feels related.
