    Privileged to have been invited and welcomed onto Waitangi yesterday at start of commemoration of 180 years of the Treaty. As was stated at the pōwhiri, it is incumbent on Muslims to stand up for social justice and ensure not just ourselves, but others honour their agreements.

    So beautiful to listen to those who were prominent figures in creating the Māori world that we now live in. Those who saw the creation of the Tino flag, those who were in Ngā Tamatoa, those who walked with Whina Cooper. How lucky are we to have these living memories with us rn

    Māori are so damn graceful when it comes to welcoming manuhiri onto the marae, even when those manuhiri are the leaders of the oppressive colonial system that we fight daily. Seriously don’t know how we do it.

    This is not to point the finger or to say that indigenous climate activism is bad - only that it is vitally important that we are aware of the game we are playing, and our role in it. The moment we forget, we become a coloniser to our own people.
