Wow: Google's "Meena" chatbot was trained on a full TPUv3 pod (2048 TPU cores) for **30 full days** - That's more than $1,400,000 of compute time to train this chatbot model. (! 100+ petaflops of sustained compute !)

after acquiring an AI startup, Apple pulled it off Project Maven. this is a big deal — means that Google isn't alone in taking this stance anymore.

This paper is a great overview describing different methods for quantifying and understanding existential risk. Great reading 👇

The coronavirus is a human tragedy, but also a sociological test: how well can a high-control, low-trust society like China cope with crises?

This is a deadly serious topic and urgently requires attention - and action. As Mary Robinson and Ban Ki-Moon said today, it's time to wake up. [end]

Climate change: come on, you all listen to Greta. You might not know that lots of current climate modelling is *much* scarier (IPCC is conservative & has a few yrs delay). Likely effects: food+water insecurity, ecosystem failures, increased conflict, state failure, mass migration

Nuclear: worst situation since (at least) the end of the Cold War. Iran Deal + intermediate weapon treaties gone, modernisation + new destabilising tech (e.g. hypersonics, machine learning in early warning systems), proliferation in ME + Asia, and possible new Rus-US arms race

Geopolitical tensions. The climate crisis. Global mistrust. The dark side of technology. These "four horsemen" are looming threats in the 21st century. To meet them, we need a UN fit for the challenges of our age.
