Maybe author means well, but this is remarkably condescending portrait of rural Midwest. Title says it all. Portrays rural folks as backwards, insular, stingy. I’m from rural MO. I represent many rural communities. None of this rings truehttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/04/opinion/sunday/trump-arkansas.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share …

I think our “elites” (right and left) have felt this way for a long time. The great thing about the era of Trump is that now it’s out in the open, we all know what we’re dealing with.
-
Oddly enough many of the "elites" live in tiny urban boxes, walk along needle-littered streets, and endure maddening traffic, all while believing their choices superior to those living in comfy homes on lush green landscapes with fresh air, god, and family.

Basically, the NYT author is saying "If you don't do it the way I like and am comfortable with, you are against your neighbor." And the author wonders why rural people are skeptical of people who come to them and say they know what's best for them.

The states that refused the Medicaid expansion...how are their rural hospitals doing? Did you refuse help bc a black man was extending his hand, or did you actually have a better plan to fix it?

I've lived in the South and the Midwest. Small towns and big cities. This absolutely rings true of a majority in those small towns and rural areas.
