    Oh, and there's a big sigh about summer ending coming from me right now too, in case you're wondering. Having to pull the boat out of the water for winter didn't help either.

    Labor Day weekend always seems to mark the end of summer in , but I think it was the snow on the mountains that really smacked me in the face with this reality. Photo by my 11 year old son, on the road back home from the ocean yesterday.

    Seal meat makes up a good portion of what's in subsistence hunters' freezers in Kotzebue. However, the sea ice the seals haul out on is diminishing, and new research has shown the window to hunt seals is getting shorter as a result.

    Chukchi Sea average daily extent for July in passive microwave data was the highest since 2012. Even with that, the typical July extent has decreased 28% since the late 1970s.

    The northern sea route remains closed to non-ice hardened vessels as high concentration persists in the eastern Kara Sea in AMSR2 analysis courtesy U. Bremen. Areas farther east the ice melt is more advanced.
