It varies. "Female genital mutilation" encompasses everything from stuff that's worse than what's normally done to boys, to things that are comparable, to things are that comparatively trivia. "FGM is worse than MGM" as a blanket statement is sort of meaningless.

(In studies of women who've suffered the procedure, clitoridectomy actually seems to have significantly less effect on adult female sexual satisfaction than one might assume. Now, *I* don't think that's a reason to stop treating clitoridectomy as a barbarous, criminal practice,

but the people who always get indignant when one dares compare male and female circumcision presumably would if they were actually consistent.)

i'm always a bit wary of arguments for/against various ways of treating children that are made on the grounds of how it impacts their adult life.
-
on the one hand, people can learn to cope with almost anything *later on* no matter how abusive it ways. especially if they don't remember the pain and trauma. and on the other it kind of presumes away the personhood of children themselves
-
Oh, I don't disagree; I only bring it up because "circumcised men can still function sexually as adults" is so often brought up by people defending the practice.
-
yeah, that irks me to no end. that's why i go to the analogy of chopping off a baby's ring fingers. you don't really *need* ring fingers to have almost fully normal functioning hands, but it would be obviously horrible to do it.
