Harvard students have been protesting the tenure denial of Professor Lorgia García-Peña for the past two days. We believe this is unjust and must be rectified.

Robert Reid-Pharr said, “We need to ask, not just in her but in all cases, how it is that certain faculty members— particularly people of color, particularly women —are being asked to do all sorts of extra work, but that work is not necessarily properly judged, or remunerated...”

The New York Times doesn't cover a story like this unless they think it's a big deal. I worked w the reporter on background, and I know she did tons of fact-finding. Harvard Pres has made a huge error with the tenure case.

the university wants you to learn about anti-racism but put none of it to practice. they want to make ceos & class elites, not community organizers. the university wants someone who doesn’t get in their way. and they want to make a donor out of you above all.

you still, for some reason, think this university has a soul. while students of color are over-policed by campus PD. while ethnic studies departments are underresourced & professors of color are denied tenure. while sexual assault cases are swept under the rug.

Here in an excerpt from my remarks on Harvard's decision not to tenure Lorgia García Peña and the context in which that occurred.

Today we occupied the Harvard Admissions office to show them that they can’t just use us as diversity tokens. Our histories need to be taught in the classroom. Harvard can’t get away with just talking diversity without any actual action

We gave Harvard 48 hours to fulfill our demands. They did not. We said we’d be back. Here we are. This time, we brought more power with us. We were joined by the Graduate Student Union striking for fair pay, healthcare, & protection from discrimination & harassment

Harvard says it wants ethnic studies scholars. So why did it just deny tenure to one of its own?

So tired of colleagues of color's work not getting recognized. Harvard cannot see the brilliance of Lorgia Garcia Peña's work because of the absence of senior Latinx scholars to tell them what it is about, and systematic undervaluing of anything Latinx communities.
