you seem to be under the mistaken impression that all criminals can be reformed. maybe yes, maybe no. but justice is keeping them away from you and your family, not letting them go because it might hurt their job prospects someday

You might have some Machiavellian justification if it actually worked, but it still hasn’t had any measurable effect on crime rates. It’s both a moral and utilitarian failure. Other countries have lower crime, and lower recidivism rates without enacting these types of policies.

Again: if it worked, this would be a moral argument. But it’s just wasting money and furthering trauma.
