Queen's Gambit is well made, but it employs virtually every child prodigy movie cliché ever -- here is this random (probably IM) chess player, just working as a janitor in an orphanage, and spending his days playing chess with himself. In what world?

Getting into episode 2, the interior set design is phenomenal: Everything from the wallpaper to the credenza, the television and vacuum cleaner.. it’s like peering into a time capsule of 1960s American suburbia

Best ever! Her character is great and love the 50’s and 60’s alone! Plus she isn’t some weasely feminist.

Nah, that's believable. Look at it as if the janitor was a guy who played guitar at the fringe pro level, ya know, 85th percentile. There are janitors like that around.

What makes you think he was probably IM? He isn't depicted in the show as some kind of elite player, he even brings in the instructor from the local chess club when he can't challenge Beth anymore. Seemed to me that he was just a hobby player who taught her the basics.

Just based on his knowledge of various openings and the game — especially in the era this set in, where you didn’t have the same instant access you have now — sets him above casual chess players

The very best chess player I ever knew was a kid I went to high school with who was unremarkable academically. He would play anyone afterschool who challenged him and I don't know him ever to have lost. He joined the military after highschool and he's a security guard now
