Yup. As an HR person and recruiter I was constantly asked how to get hired on the IGN editorial team. My first question back was always “are you writing?” You’d be surprised how often the answer was no.

The same mentality is why I tell people not to put "aspiring" in their twitter bio. If you want to do something professionally, you should already be doing it - and if you're doing it, you're not aspiring.

I mean, instead of treating the interaction in a negative way and basically downtalk subtweeting anyone wanting to get a career in gaming, you could detail it in a reasonable manner. I don't get this gatekeepy mentality.

I don't feel like it's gatekeeping, it's more akin to "it's really complex because everyone gets into the industry in a different way, a lot of the time under weird and/or rare combinations of events, so by answering accurately it won't necessarily help you in your position"
