Odd that he be ignorant of the ancient emotional bond we have for The Old Country. The land is part of our spirituality, deep level, even for Americans. I am so happy and proud to be American, best country in the world, but part of my soul is in my land my ancestors came from.

If you wanna identity with past glories you also have to identify with past atrocities. Can't have it one way. For example what about the souls of the millions of native americans which were systematically murdered also by your wonderful country?

Native Americans have plenty of blood, terror, and savagery in their own past as well. Every people does. To ignore this is to erase their past. Humans are not angels. Not then, not now. And to punish the living for the acts of the dead is wrong.

There were only 3 million people in North America in 1500. Most of the Amerindians who died when settlers came into contact w/ them were killed by unfamiliar diseases, rather than war. But anyway, I don't think ethnic identity is just, or even mostly, about past glories.
