To be fair, this trick wouldn't work if we'd use a reasonable voting system. First past the post is not a reasonable system because it allows spoiler effects like this.
Jungle primary in CA48. Top two finish regardless of party. Many Dems are running splitting the vote multiple ways. Baugh and Dana could end up in top two spots.

If votes were ranked choice, that wouldn't happen. Only ranked choice defeats the spoiler effect inherent in first past the post (and jungle primary is still essentially a form of FPTP).
