We can always rely on you to give us sporadic feelings of horror, Dan!

Well, my twitter feed is a rainbows and unicorn-free zone.
-
Until the day we discover an ingenious use of rainbows was the only way ancient warriors were able to stop the dreaded “Aerial Unicorn Assault.”

Seems unsurprising in hindsight, but I never even considered this until now. Thanks as always for the insight!

That's exactly how I feel about it too. It makes total sense when you ruminate about the conditions for a minute, but it's not something that comes to mind. When we remember this day, it should.

Did anyone try to rescue them?
-
Of course...but there was so much to do...so many wrecks at the same time...and more than a foot of belt armor on these battleships. Very tough to break into (especially if under water). They didn't always know where men were trapped as well.
-
Thank you, Dan, for all your great work. May the memory of those brave men be a blessing.

Lt. Jim Downing, second oldest survivor when I interviewed him, told the haunting story of finding his crewmates asphyxiated bodies in the hull of the West Virginia. They'd checked off boxes on a calendar, waiting for rescue that never came. http://historyauthor.com/2016/12/lt-downing-infamy/ …pic.twitter.com/CWSmeOQFEE

My Great Grandfather was taking a shit when the bombings started. I wish he was around to retell the story but I can’t imagine what was going through those soldiers minds. He luckily survived and lived to his mid 80s.
-
Everyone was almost certainly shitting AFTER the bombing started, so your Great Grandfather was a man ahead of his time.

-
Haha amen. I have his medal that they gave out to survivors of that day. To hear him tell the story (I was unfortunately too young to have been too curious about the subject then) was great.
