Counterfactuals are used for exploring different causal elements, with the results based on utility to understanding. Hence "wonder how much" vice "nuh-uh." Since we're at claims, I would love to see the support for yours about universal ancient autocracy.

Oh, cool, by "autocracy" you meant "heterogeneous mix of oligarchy, democracy, weak monarchy, absolute monarchy, decentralised empires, centralised empires and proto-states." *Now* I get it. You're still not getting that a counterfactual is not a truth claim.

Going back to Dan's actual original point: innovation grows with interaction, especially as the integration of separate bodies of knowledge. As 'easy' discoveries are made, harder discoveries require larger teams and more powerful tools.

It may not be linear (think Brooks "Mythical Man Month") as in programming, but additional (especially historically under-utilized) brainpower leads to greater innovation. i.e: both NDT and Carlin's points are more probable than it not making a difference.

this is like imagining that your team broke up an early touchdown pass in what ended up being a tight loss. it would certainly be a different outcome, but the system around it is chaotic enough that there’s no telling what changes it actually means

simple first question that comes to mind: what if the “held down” women are the main motivation men had to progress things in the first place?

This is a weird convo. This is about opportunity.Take (just)the question of geniuses for example. If we imagine that a certain % of people will be born with this level intellect then societies with very limited opportunity/social mobility waste a larger number of theirs than we do

If geniuses have a way to get an education and rise to positions of influence then the society benefits more than if they end up trapped on a farm because they happen to be a serf.

maybe the genes that lead to genius only get a chance to survive reproduction because of the outsized nutrition inputs from being a lord, due to having other costs. chaotic system!

There were plenty of well-fed female aristocrats, and when given the chance, they produced some cool stuff.
