Not allowing incarcerated individuals to vote seems fairly arbitrary. Their punishment is the loss of freedom, however they remain US citizens, who if older than 18, are afforded the right to vote. History of this goes back to restricting the rights of *some* voters.
-
So then we should change the name from dept of corrections to dept of punishment
-
Sadly, that name is probably the most applicable at the moment. We need a big conversation about the role of prisons, not as houses of punishment but instead as houses of rehabilitation. Giving inmates the tools/counseling needed to correct their behaviors upon release.
-
agreed. I think prisons should provide the things lacked that led to criminality in order to live up to the title of corrections. Civic engagement as a way to let them know they have a say in the world
-
Absolutely. Voting gives you skin in the game & ownership in our democracy. IMO what better way to keep incarcerated citizens in touch & engaged w/ the world they'll soon be contributing to. Again, that the incarcerated citizens ever lost the franchise to begin with is troubling

If incarcerated individuals shouldn’t vote, then their labor shouldn’t be exploited by major corporations/entities for what amounts to pennies either.
-
My only issue with the voting while incarcerated is that I don’t trust those who run prisons to allow their ballots to be cast freely. It’s a far worse proposition than allowing a 16 year old the right to vote in that regard.
-
this is a very good point. how to even potentially get campaign materials through DOCs and wardens without them being tampered with too
-
We can get campaign materials into prisons. Would they actually get past the lobby? What news sources would be available? Policing the private prisons would be almost impossible.
-
Election monitors? Like we used to send to other countries in the before time. Sigh, I hate this particular reality timeline.pic.twitter.com/iRbRxsIBtJ

We need then at all the polls!
-
Omg, right?! Wtf have we become.
