”Let me make a plea for permanently banning the idea one can draw a line between “useless” & “useful” knowledge. Reducing research to short-term contributions may lead the field to be badly compromised.” ERC President Bourguignon’s speech: 🇪🇺

Fully differentiated parietal cells acting as in the stomach. They can even grow gastric in a dish. See Stange et al 2013. doi: 10.1016/j.cell.2013.09.008. Beautiful animation by Jeroen Huijben

Deletion of the two alleles of only a single gene (APC) in gut unleashes the pathway and results in the formation of an adenoma. Also known as polyps, these can evolve into colon cancer. Shown by Nick Barker et al in doi: 10.1038/nature07602.

Illustration of three random fates of a (blue) crypt . The first one is almost immediately unlucky and pushed out by a neighbouring stem cell. The second and third do better. The latter eventually even overtakes the entire crypt. But all by chance: Neutral competition

Two PhD students, Hugo Snippert and Laurens van der Flier, took Nick Barker's lineage tracing of Lgr5 crypt to a next, multicolor level using their mouse We saw no asymmetric divisions Neutrally competing stem cells just divide and push others out of the way

Mamoru Watanabe's lab developed ways to transplant colon organoids to diseased intestines. Toshi Sato expanded a single RFP+ colon stem cell into many organoids. These were infused by Mamoru's people into the colons of mice with experimental colitis. Look what happened
