despite their high levels of activity, Chinese diplomat accounts are rarely given a “government” label by social media accounts. On Twitter only 14% of Chinese diplomat accounts have a “government” label.pic.twitter.com/qZk7Bmeqiv
a small number of accounts generate the vast majority of engagement with Chinese diplomats on Twitter. Nearly half of all Chinese diplomat retweets originate from the top 1% of “super-spreader” accounts.
One in ten of the retweets of Chinese diplomats were from accounts that were later suspended by @TwitterSafety . Some accounts exclusively amplify one diplomat, forming a “cone” shape around that diplomat. Others are grouped in the middle, amplifying several Chinese diplomatspic.twitter.com/IbhfkbIPG1
Chinese diplomats in the U.K.
we find a large network of inauthentic Twitter accounts that are responsible for 44% of the Chinese ambassador to the UK’s retweets and 20% of his replieshttps://demtech.pub/3tEeqHX
the creation dates, tweet times, and account integration appears highly coordinated. These accounts amplify U.K.-based Chinese diplomats within sixty seconds of a message from another account in the network. It appears that human operators manage some accounts
Finally - this network of accounts consistently use a set of similar phrases. These phrases were often first used in speeches by the U.K.-based Chinese diplomatspic.twitter.com/WqPtN0WiMm
