    The thing is, this would have been out in a few days anyway. If Trump really wanted to take the credit, a signing ceremony in the White House on Monday would have been a much smarter move. It’s not just harmful, it’s unnecessarily and stupidly harmful.

    Agreed. Stand up for the agency’s integrity. FDA commissioners are stewards of the agency, if nothing else.

    Only 2 states (AZ in July, now NM) have activated crisis standards of care. But hospitals in many others have implemented their own policies. Expert says state activation increases transparency. But similar to early emergency declarations, public perceptions could deter.

    This is the first. But this is better than the previous decision to allow institutions to implement their own plans. With a state-wide activation, we should see more transparency and consistency (when necessary).

    3. In surprise news of today. Russian vaccine says that will begin trials of the two vaccines in combination. Both vaccines are adenoviral vectors. I've not seen confirmation of this from AZ yet, but interesting news if true.

    Media, please stop describing EUAs as “approvals” or, worse, “final approval.” Also, EUAs don’t dictate “who should get it first”; they authorize only for populations for whom risk-benefit threshold is met, but don’t say who, w/in that population (eg non-preg adults) gets it 1st.

    In general my beef here is with any talk of a quantum description of some macroscopic phenomenon for which we have no idea how to assign quantum states. This just seems like bad practice. (Of course, it's not a problem for macro quantum phenomena like superconductivity.)

    NEW: A 32-year-old close to Dr. Fauci -- the brother of his daughter's boyfriend -- has died of Covid-19, he just told me: "He's a perfectly healthy 32-year old guy who got COVID, got the cardiac complications and died within like a week." Many condolences to the family.

    Think about it. / go off the rails for most of 21. faces huge questions on efficacy gap. Where's ? late. The Big Pharma track record - aside from - is getting to look awful, which is why so many people have said, this is going to take years

    I think Hahn should let himself be fired - or call Trump's bluff. He's out in 40 days no matter what: go out with some dignity.

    As long as the decision is made at the career staff level, I suppose he effectively/technically may have done this (e.g., Denise Hinton, chief scientist, has been signing EUAs). But agreed completely perception is problem.

    The damage done here, by inserting politics into a critical public health and regulatory decision, is many times worse than any tiny gain that could come from advancing the approval by a few hours.

    The bad news: this pattern change will not fundamentally change broader situation. In fact, these precip totals--while better in comparison to recent bone dry weather--won't even keep up w/avg precip. Cumulative deficit will *grow* further over this period. 3/4

    The good news: rain and mountain snow is inbound (and in some spots already falling) across Northern California. Additional light to moderate precipitation is likely on and off for the next 7-10 days. No big storms, but a respectable soaking. (1/4)
