Today, for most of us, it’s someone else’s people. Someone else’s mom. Their child. Their neighbor. Their lifelong friend. But if we don’t do something dammit, one day, like a thunderbolt from a clear sky, it might be your person. And then it'll be too late.

Journalism isn’t the safest trade, but there is a class of folks that includes the @POTUS who are invested, consciously in most cases, in endangering and threatening the lives of those in the press. I realize that this may prove futile, but today needs to be the end of that shit.

This shooting may not be specifically related to Trump's cynical war on the media—but it's related to the atmosphere he's cultivated. He has intentionally stoked rabid mistrust and even hatred of journalists. We've all seen his rallies. He's done it for 3 years. He must stop. 2/2

I've been reporting on mass shootings almost nonstop for six years. They all really hurt. This one really hurts in a new kind of way—not just seeing colleagues dead, but knowing that we all toil under increasing danger as the president continuously demonizes our profession. 1/2

Journalists work tirelessly to bring us people’s harrowing stories of violence, injustice, and oppression. They give a voice to those who have none. Now, by tragic circumstance, the journalists at Capital Gazette have to tell us stories of their own. Heartbreaking beyond words.

Milo Yiannopoulos called for journalists to be gunned down as a trolling tactic for attention. Same with Trump when he said reporters are the enemy of the people. When we vilify or dehumanize any group, we place them at great risk of harm. Doing so for ratings is unconscionable.
